Carmel is not your typical suburb - it's home to a thriving business district and has a designated arts district in its Old Towne Area. Of Hamilton County's top 25 employers, 17 of them maintain a headquarters in Carmel which helps to put Carmel as the 16th in the U.S. for median income in 2006. Unemployment has remained low despite the recent economic downturn. Carmel has become home to some of the metro areas largest and newest employers.
Homes have appreciated steadily over the last 20 years. With a median price of $271,900 and average household income of over $114,209, Carmel is one of the most affluent cities in the metro area. Area rents average $957.00 per month. Carmel's more notable neighborhood is the Village of West Clay, which is the only Traditional Neighborhood Development in Indiana.
The Carmel-Clay school district is well known for its academic and athletic achievements. Recent results of SATs showed that students scored over 30 points higher on both math and verbal. The district is rated with a Gold Medal by Expansion Management Magazine (placing it within the top 16% in the country). The district serves close to 15,200 students, with over 7,300 in elementary schools, over 3,700 in middle/intermediate schools and Carmel High School's 2009 enrollment stood at 4,221 students.
Carmel boasts 14 parks filled with acres of greenspace for your leisure and shelters for rent. Home to the Monon Greenway, named for the rails of the Monon Railroad which were laid through Carmel in 1882, it's one of the Midwest's most successful rail-trails in terms of popularity, design and economic development. The newly opened Monon Center provides a wide variety of activities including fitness programs, elevated running track, gymnasium and childcare - plus an indoor and outdoor aquatic center featuring pools and water slides.
